Petero Maciu, a young farmer, is utilizing the land to secure his livelihood. At just 21 years old, Petero hails from Nawi, Buca Bay, Cakaudrove. He began farming at a tender age, encouraged by his father, Sakapo Tui, to make good use of agricultural land.

Petero belongs to a family of five and is the second child. They live together in the village. He reached year eight in his education but chose not to continue studying further, realizing the benefits of farming and the potential it held for him.

In 2020, Petero decided to focus solely on farming, determined not to depend on anyone else. He cultivates land owned by the Koronicivaciva clan, producing crops such as yaqona, taro, cassava, coconut, and various vegetables. This year, he mentioned his yaqona now sells in the Labasa market.

Petero emphasizes the importance of maximizing agricultural land for personal advancement. His yaqona is sold in Savusavu at prices ranging from $70 to $80 per kilogram, with initial sales earning him about $11,000.

His farmland stretches around five kilometers, which he diligently tends every day to improve his yield. Despite the hardships, Petero remains dedicated to his farming efforts, aiming to enhance his living standards. Sometimes he travels a distance through the bush to facilitate his work.

In his view, land utilization has benefited him immensely, allowing quick access to essential resources. All his efforts primarily depend on patience. The products he generates significantly support his family, providing for their needs and occasionally allowing them to purchase delicacies and beverages.

In March this year, as he celebrated his 21st birthday, he arranged for two bullocks, inviting local residents to join in the festivities. Over the last two weeks, he sold some produce to ease the burden of transporting his yaqona and food to market.

Petero’s journey serves as an excellent example for young people in the village, who often do not fully utilize their time to engage in such productive activities. He hopes that the government will recognize those eager to develop their land and provide resources to support their endeavors.

At present, Petero seeks assistance with farming supplies and nutritious food items. He also wishes for improvements in transport paths to facilitate the movement of goods to and from the market.

His dream is to build a proper house and work on the land, using it to physically improve his living situation and to support his family with essential equipment like a tractor. He faces many challenges, particularly during adverse weather, which can complicate his farming efforts.

Petero aims to encourage more youth to effectively use the agricultural land available to them, highlighting the importance of sustainable practices. He believes that a life of poverty is a self-imposed limitation, advocating for better use of available land resources.

“We must move away from a life of dependency, listen carefully to our elders, and remain vigilant of God’s guidance through all times.”
