Farmers of Tomorrow: Narewa Village Youths Cultivate Change

A motivated group of young men and women from Narewa Village in Nadi is dedicated to enhancing their community through various agricultural initiatives, particularly farming. This group is part of the Sa Dina Youth Cooperative, which comprises 69 members, including youths.

Co-founder Buli Ratu highlighted that their cooperative has been operational since the 1960s, primarily focused on cassava farming. “Currently, we have 32 youth, 10 women, and 27 men in our cooperative. We are not only involved in agriculture but also engaged in community service, actively participating in village clean-up efforts for a healthier community,” said Mr. Ratu.

Last year, they officially registered as a cooperative with the support of the Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises and Communications. Recently, the group received a tractor from the Ministry of Agriculture, with part of the cost subsidized by the government. Mr. Ratu expressed gratitude, saying, “We are fortunate to have a tractor that facilitates all our land preparation tasks.”

He emphasized their collective effort in financing one-third of the tractor’s total cost. “We are aware of the significant challenge ahead, but we believe that our unity will enable us to achieve great success soon.”

The cooperative employs the solesolevaki method, which involves mutual aid in farming endeavors. They have also secured a contract with Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa for the supply of vegetables and cassava. Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu underscored the importance of youth participation in agriculture as a means to build stronger, more productive communities.
