A group of farmers in Labasa is still awaiting their sugarcane planting grant, bringing their concerns to the attention of Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica during his recent visit to Lajonia. The farmers, including Vineshwar Prasad, Sunil Nair, Kamal Singh, and Parmeshwar Pillay, reported that unlike in previous years, they have yet to receive their grants, which they applied for between August and October.
During the visit, Mr. Kamikamica pledged to relay their concerns to Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar. Mr. Prasad, who manages four acres of land, shared that they continue cultivating their crops while awaiting the grant. “The plants are growing well,” he noted, though he expressed frustration after being informed by an officer from the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) that the Ministry of Sugar had not yet released the funds.
Similarly, Mr. Nair has cultivated sugarcane on his 3.5-acre plot, emphasizing that the FSC and the ministry should expedite the grant process following farm inspections. Mr. Pillay, a seasoned sugarcane farmer with over 20 years of experience, highlighted the importance of the industry for their aging community of farmers, many of whom rely solely on this income.
In contrast, Minister Singh, who recently returned from the COP29 conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, stated that the Ministry of Finance had indeed released the necessary funds, which were passed to the FSC last week. “Funds were released to FSC on November 12 and 18, and they are currently verifying the farms,” Singh explained. He noted last year’s delayed release of funds resulted in poor germination and urged thorough checks before the funds are distributed.
This situation underscores the importance of timely communication and support for farmers, who play a crucial role in the agricultural sector. As the grant process evolves, a focus on championing these farmers will strengthen the industry and ensure its sustainability.
In summary, Labasa farmers await their sugarcane planting grants, which have been delayed this year, prompting them to reach out to government officials for assistance. The Minister for Sugar has assured them that funds have been allocated and are being verified for distribution. This highlights the ongoing commitment from the government to support the farming community as they navigate challenges in their agricultural endeavors. With the right support, these farmers can continue to thrive and contribute to the local economy.
