Vasiti Soko, the Director of the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), has announced her departure as she prepares to start a new chapter in the United States. Known for her prominent role in guiding Fijians during natural disasters, Soko has been a key communicator through television, radio, and newspapers, sharing crucial information about safety measures and evacuation center operations.
On Thursday evening, she was honored at a farewell event attended by the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, alongside Assistant Minister Jovesa Vocea. Minister Ditoka praised Soko’s significant contributions, highlighting her leadership, which transformed the NDMO into a benchmark of excellence recognized for its proactive strategies and innovative methods in disaster preparedness, mitigation, and response.
Throughout her five-year tenure, Soko became the first woman to hold the position and dedicated her efforts to enhancing Fiji’s disaster management framework, ensuring communities are better prepared for the increasing challenges posed by climate change and natural events.
