Zanzeer Singh, a notable sports journalist in the country, passed away at the age of 49 on Tuesday at Lautoka Aspen Hospital after a prolonged illness. His younger brother, former Fiji TV journalist Ranbeer Singh, remembered him as someone who lived a joyful and sociable life, known for hosting gatherings and having a generous spirit.

Charlie Charters, a former Fiji rugby union official and sports marketing executive, praised Zanzeer’s humanity, integrity, and humor. He often directed news tips to Singh, recognizing his skill as a writer and determination to secure coverage in newspapers.

Writer Jone Kalouniviti described Singh as an exemplary media professional from the western region, acknowledging that while his directness could be misunderstood, his humor remained endearing.

Indra Singh, news director at FBC, reflected on Zanzeer’s legendary status among colleagues, highlighting his unique storytelling methods and unwavering willingness to help others. He expressed grief over the loss of a vibrant personality who brought joy to their lives.

Zanzeer attended Namaka Public School in Nadi, where he was classmates with former Fiji 7s rugby coach Iliesa Tanivula and former Nadi and Pacific Islanders hooker Joeli Lotawa. He later went to Swami Vivekananda College.

Zanzeer began his journalism career with the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation as a stringer in 1997, joined Fiji Sun in 1999, and then worked for two decades at Fiji Times from 2003.

He is survived by his wife Rita Singh and their children, Nirvana and Siddhartha Iyer. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, with an initial viewing at Lautoka’s Girmit Centre, followed by the final rites at Lovu crematorium at 1 pm.
