Farewell to a Sporting Legend: Remembering Zanzeer Singh

Zanzeer Singh, a prominent sports journalist in the country, passed away at the age of 49 at Lautoka Aspen Hospital on Tuesday after battling a long illness.

His younger brother, former Fiji TV journalist Ranbeer Singh, shared that Zanzeer, often referred to as ‘Zan,’ lived a fulfilling and sociable life, known for hosting social gatherings and possessing a kind and generous spirit.

Charlie Charters, a former official with the Fiji rugby union and sports marketing executive, praised Zanzeer’s humanity and integrity, highlighting his talent as a reporter. Charters noted that he would often direct news tips to Zanzeer during his shifts due to his skillful writing and determination in securing space for his stories in print.

Writer Jone Kalouniviti recognized Zanzeer as a genuine figure in the media industry, acknowledging his straightforward nature which some might have misinterpreted as bluntness. He also pointed out Zanzeer’s unique sense of humor, which although sometimes intense, was undeniably amusing.

Indra Singh, the news director at FBC, called Zanzeer a legend among his colleagues, commending his inventive approach to story gathering and his readiness to assist others. Singh mentioned Zanzeer’s love for sports and beer, reflecting on the joy he brought to those around him and the life lessons he imparted.

Zanzeer Singh was an alumnus of Namaka Public School in Nadi, where he was classmates with former Fiji 7s rugby coach Iliesa Tanivula and former Nadi and Pacific Islanders player Joeli Lotawa. He continued his education at Swami Vivekananda College. His journalism career began in 1997 with the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation as a stringer, followed by positions at Fiji Sun in 1999 and Fiji Times in 2003, where he dedicated two decades of service.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Singh, and their children, Nirvana and Siddhartha Iyer. His funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, beginning with viewing at Lautoka’s Girmit Centre, followed by the final rites at Lovu crematorium at 1 pm.
