Members of Parliament and the Parliament secretariat extended heartfelt farewells to Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the outgoing Speaker of Parliament and the President-elect, during a ceremony held yesterday. This event served as a fitting tribute to Ratu Naiqama’s leadership and significant contributions over the previous two years, as he prepares to take on the important role of Head of State.

In his farewell address, Ratu Naiqama emphasized the importance of continuity in public service, stating, “I will be going across to the other side of the ground just to continue the work there. I’m not there to finish it, I’m just there to continue the work.” His remarks underline a commitment to ongoing service and the value of building on established efforts.

Opposition Member Viliame Naupoto delivered a message of gratitude on behalf of all members and staff, acknowledging Ratu Naiqama’s dedication to Parliament during his term: “Keimami cavuta saka neimami vakavinavinaka levu ena loma ni rua na yabaki, ena nomuni mai liutaka saka tiko na Palimedi ni noda vanua. Keimami vakavinavinakataka saka na nomuni yalovinaka kei na nomuni vakatulewa matau.” (We wish to express our sincere gratitude for your wisdom, sound leadership, guidance and kind heart for leading the Parliament of Fiji over the past two years.)

Ratu Naiqama is set to take the Oath of Office as President of Fiji at the State House on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 11 a.m.
