Crowds gathered at the National Gymnasium in Suva today to honor the memory of Fijian boxer Ubayd Haider, affectionately known as the ‘Prince of Fiji.’ Haider, who was previously named Nathaniel Singh, passed away at Lautoka Hospital on Sunday night after suffering severe head injuries sustained during a match in Nadi on October 26.

In attendance was Sports Minister Jese Saukuru, who delivered a heartfelt eulogy. He remarked on Fiji’s profound loss, stating, “Fiji has lost a golden talent and the country mourns the loss of the young boxer.” He emphasized how Haider and his brothers served as inspirations for younger generations, nurturing aspirations of excellence in sports.

Former Minister Dr. Mahendra Reddy, who had a long-standing acquaintance with Haider, recalled him as a humble and dedicated individual. He praised Haider’s commitment to his boxing career, wishing that his legacy would live on in the sport despite his untimely departure.

Condolences also poured in from boxing legend Sonny Bill Williams, who expressed his sorrow during a phone call that was broadcast to those present. He committed to visiting Haider’s family to extend his personal support during this difficult time.

Following the memorial at the National Gymnasium, Haider’s body was transported to his family residence in Laucala Bay. A burial ceremony is set to occur at Raralevu Cemetery in Nausori. Ubayd Haider is survived by his wife, Helen, and their two young sons, who now carry on his legacy.

This tragic event serves as a reminder of the risks athletes take to pursue their passion and how their contributions can inspire future generations. The outpouring of love and memories shared by friends, family, and fans highlights the impact Haider had on both his sport and his community. In remembering him, there is hope that his dedication will inspire others to chase their dreams fearlessly.
