Ratu Baleidreima, a 53-year-old resident of Nadi, is determined to construct a more resilient home that can withstand future flooding. Recently, he, along with his wife and five children, was evacuated from their house as floodwaters inundated their living space. Currently, the family is taking shelter at Andrews Primary School in Nadi.

In 2019, Mr. Baleidreima purchased land in the Nawaijikuma Settlement, an area known for its vulnerability to flooding, and built a temporary dwelling for his family. The security guard, originally from Nasaumatua on Ovalau, expressed that they have often faced evacuation during flood events.

“My greatest hope is to build a high-post house for my family. While we have plans for this, my limited income means I must prioritize my children’s education first,” he shared. His eldest child attends Nadi Special School, while his second eldest will begin high school next year, and the three younger children are enrolled in primary school.

Mr. Baleidreima recounted the recent flood incident that occurred on Christmas Day: “We were just about to have lunch when water started flowing into our home. I alerted the police, and we quickly packed some food, cooking utensils, and clothes before being transported to safety.”

Now, the family is anxiously awaiting the water levels to recede so Mr. Baleidreima can return home to clean up and assess the damage.

This story illustrates the resilience of families like the Baleidreimas, who strive to overcome challenges and build a better future for their children. With determination and support, they can work towards creating a safer living environment that protects them from the unpredictable effects of climate change.
