A family in Nadi, Fiji, has become homeless after a fire completely destroyed their two-storey, seven-bedroom house, along with their commercial shop and Kava Bar. The incident occurred yesterday morning at a property owned by Abdul Munaf, which had served as a family business for over 35 years.
According to Nazil Nabeel, Mr. Munaf’s son, the family had closed the shop on Saturday night and were asleep when the fire broke out. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Mr. Munaf described how the blaze likely started from the back of the building, affecting the two-bedroom apartment and the Kava Bar on the ground floor, while their five-bedroom family home was located on the upper level.
Mr. Nabeel shared the family’s distress, stating, “There is nothing that we could save except the clothes we were wearing. Right now, we are homeless; we don’t know where to stay. My parents are at a friend’s place.” He expressed the emotional turmoil of watching their years of hard work go up in flames, estimating the damage to exceed $100,000.
Officials from the National Fire Authority have confirmed their presence at the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire, with police also conducting their own inquiries.
