Family of Seven in Desperate Need After Devastating Fire Loss

A family of seven is in need of assistance following the destruction of their home in a fire last Friday at Belego Settlement, Savusavu. Naren Chand, the 59-year-old homeowner, reported that his daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren were at the residence when the fire broke out.

Mr. Chand was away managing their business in Dreketi when he received the distressing news around 7:30 PM. While the cause of the fire is still unknown, he stated that his children believe it may have been triggered by an electrical wiring issue in the ceiling that ignited before spreading through the walls.

He noted that his daughter had recently constructed a flat for her family to live closer to them.

The homeowner expressed that it took over 20 years for him and his wife to build their house, storeroom, and car park from scratch, saying they have worked diligently to provide for their family.

“We require significant help to rebuild our home, and my grandchildren need support to continue their education as we have lost everything,” he said. His grandchildren currently attend Savusavu Secondary School and Khemendra Central School.

Mr. Chand estimated the damage to be around $400,000. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that investigations are underway, and fortunately, there were no casualties. This incident marks the second house fire in the Northern Division this month, with another occurring in Qelewaqa, Labasa on September 14.
