A family experienced significant loss after their apartment was completely consumed by fire on Nasoki Street in Lautoka yesterday afternoon. The family, still grappling with the aftermath, chose not to provide comments following the incident.
Witnesses in the neighborhood expressed both concern and relief, noting that no one was injured during the blaze. The National Fire Authority (NFA) responded quickly and successfully contained the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby residences.
NFA CEO Puamau Sowane reported that firefighters arrived on the scene at 12:03 PM, where they found a three-flat structure, composed of concrete and wood, ablaze. “They promptly set up a delivery from the tank supply to stop the flames from reaching adjacent homes only meters away,” Mr. Sowane explained.
With assistance from a fire hydrant located at Vitogo Parade, the firefighters managed to extinguish the flames, although they remained on-site until 4 PM to address any lingering hotspots. The property, which was owned by a 70-year-old woman, suffered total structural damage, while the financial implications of the destruction are still being assessed. Two out of the three flats were occupied by tenants at the time of the fire.
