Family First: Tackling HIV/AIDS Through Community Support

The Rev. Simione Tugi, the general secretary of the Fiji Council of Churches, has emphasized the crucial role of families in combating HIV/AIDS. He has also urged the public to take the initiative to get tested at medical facilities.

Tugi pointed out that in Fijian society, the stigma surrounding HIV often prevents individuals from seeking early testing. He noted that many people feel uncomfortable visiting churches or hospitals due to societal attitudes and may even face rejection from family and friends.

He expressed that such attitudes do not align with the true essence of Christianity and encouraged a shift from traditional mindsets. Tugi stressed the need for community acceptance, highlighting that every person is cherished by God, and we must support one another.

He stated, “Taking care of each other is vital, especially for the vulnerable individuals within our communities.” He called on the church, the vanua, and the government to step up and provide care for those affected by HIV.

Tugi urged individuals to seek out medical centers for testing, stressing, “This is a matter of life and death; you must prioritize your health.” Additionally, he highlighted the importance of family time, indicating that nurturing these bonds is essential for the future of Fijian society.

He referenced the Biblical significance of family and church, explaining that when family structures disintegrate, societal foundations start to crumble. Tugi lamented the current trend where couples and children often lead separate lives, resulting in children seeking validation outside the home as parents are frequently absent.

He concluded by saying that while many believe they can manage their issues independently, the reality is that a comprehensive approach is necessary for addressing these challenges.
