Ratu Baleidreima, 53, from Nadi, is determined to build a safer home that can withstand future flooding. Recently, he and his family of seven were forced to evacuate their residence when floodwaters invaded their home. Currently, they are seeking refuge at Andrews Primary School in Nadi.
In 2019, Mr. Baleidreima purchased land at the Nawaijikuma Settlement in Nawaka, an area frequently affected by floods, where he built a temporary shelter for his family. The security guard, originally from Nasaumatua, Lovoni, Ovalau, has experienced multiple evacuations during floods and aspires to construct a house elevated on stilts to protect his family in times of disaster. However, his limited income, coupled with a focus on his children’s education, has made this goal challenging to achieve.
His eldest child is attending Nadi Special School, while his second child is set to start high school next year, and his three younger children are in primary school. Describing the chaos of their recent evacuation, Mr. Baleidreima recounted how they were about to enjoy Christmas lunch when floodwaters surged into their home. After alerting the police, they quickly packed essential items and were transported to safety.
Once the floodwaters recede, Mr. Baleidreima intends to return home first to begin cleaning up the mess left behind.
This story highlights not just the challenges faced by families in flood-prone regions but also the resilience and determination of individuals like Mr. Baleidreima, who are striving to secure a safer future for their loved ones. There is hope that with community support and increased awareness, families affected by such disasters will receive the assistance they need to rebuild and cope with the growing threat of climate change.
