A heartbreaking incident unfolded in Vunivau, Labasa last Friday night when a family lost their home, built over 45 years and valued at $200,000, to a devastating fire. Prasheel Naicker, 27, shared that his father, grandmother, and uncle were at home during the incident while he was attending a gathering in Labasa Town with relatives.
The fire reportedly ignited in the family’s prayer room and quickly spread to the roof. It was only through the alertness of two passersby that the family was informed of the flames, allowing them to call for help. Despite Naicker’s multiple attempts to reach out to the National Fire Authority (NFA), including hurried visits to the local fire station, the response came too late to save any belongings.
This tragic event marks the second house fire in the Northern Division within a mere two weeks. The first incident occurred on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, Labasa, where another family lost their home while they were away, with damages estimated around $250,000. These recent fires have raised significant concerns regarding fire safety and emergency response capabilities in rural areas.
Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that investigations into both fires are ongoing. The authorities emphasized the urgent need for improved fire safety measures and resources to better equip rural communities for such emergencies.
While the Naicker family is currently staying with relatives as they cope with their loss, there is a collective hope among the affected families and their community for necessary changes in fire safety protocols. The resilience shown by the families and the outpouring of support from the community signal a shared commitment to preventing future tragedies. Enhanced fire safety standards and preparedness can foster a safer living environment for all residents.
In summary, although this tragic loss weighs heavily on the Naicker family, the community’s strength and the lessons learned may lead to pivotal improvements in fire safety infrastructure, ultimately safeguarding against future incidents.
