Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation Viliame Gavoka has addressed media reports claiming that crew members of a foreign airline were detained after allegedly being robbed and sexually assaulted. He clarified that such claims are incorrect and emphasized the ongoing police investigation into incidents that occurred early Wednesday in a nightclub area in Nadi.

According to Mr. Gavoka, the alleged events consist of two separate incidents—one involving theft and another involving sexual assault, affecting two different crew members. He expressed concern for the well-being of the crew and noted that investigations are actively continuing.

The Ministry confirmed that a suspect known to police for the alleged assault is being questioned. Gavoka reassured that the three crew members are in good health and are currently staying at a designated local hotel for crew layovers. They are expected to return home by the end of the week, having been advised to remain within the hotel vicinity to assist with the police investigation.

Mr. Gavoka urged international media to report responsibly, warning against sensationalism without verification of incidents. He acknowledged that regrettable incidents can occur anywhere, including Fiji, and reminded tourists to exercise caution, particularly in nightclub areas at night.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible reporting and the need for visitors and locals alike to prioritize safety. The commitment of local authorities to investigate the matter underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring the health and safety of all individuals in Fiji.

In summary, while the crew members experienced traumatic incidents, they are receiving proper accommodation and support during this time. Efforts are being made to ensure their health and safety as they prepare to return home.
