Faiyaz Koya criticizes 2024-2025 National Budget policies

Opposition Member of Parliament, Faiyaz Koya, asserts that the fiscal policies outlined in the 2024-2025 National Budget will exacerbate the gap between the wealthy and the poor.

During a debate on the Budget, Koya claimed that government policies are placing undue burdens on ordinary Fijians, with increases in fringe benefit tax and other indirect taxes ultimately being passed on to consumers, making essential goods and services costlier.

He questioned the relevance of the Budget, arguing it does little to support low-income families and the working class, citing that teachers feel undervalued and underpaid.

“There is a conspicuous lack of initiative to retain domestic talent or invest in human capital. There are no significant projects or meaningful infrastructure developments, leaving many vulnerable communities without the assistance they desperately need,” he said.

Koya suggested this as a reason why the Minister for Finance did not conduct a nationwide consultation, anticipating adverse reactions from the public.

He also criticized the Budget for lacking transparency and accountability, alleging that financial benefits are being directed toward close associates and donors.

“This lack of accountability is unacceptable. The Government must provide a clear and detailed account of how public funds are being used,” Koya stated.

He added that the Budget neglects crucial sectors vital for long-term economic growth, noting the absence of substantial support for agriculture, which can provide food security and livelihoods for thousands of Fijians.

Koya also pointed out that the manufacturing sector, which has significant job-creation potential and can reduce reliance on imports, has been overlooked.

“Government’s fiscal management is poor, falling short on tax collections and failing to diversify revenue sources,” he concluded.
