Faith-based organizations are crucial in tackling suicide and mental health challenges in Fiji, according to Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa. During a recent address to Parliament, Mr. Ravunawa emphasized the necessity of including religious groups in the country’s efforts to address escalating suicide rates.

He noted that these organizations play a vital role in fostering a caring environment for individuals facing distress, while highlighting the Ministry of Health’s upcoming Suicide Prevention 2024 initiative set to launch next Tuesday.

Mr. Ravunawa commended the initiative’s theme, “Change the Narrative,” describing it as not only suitable but also essential for the shared battle against suicide. He remarked, “Faith-based organizations in Fiji have the largest reach in our communities.”

Furthermore, he pointed out the need for government backing in supporting these religious institutions. “They require better support from the government in terms of resources and capacity building. These organizations should not merely serve as a rubber stamp in consultations; rather, they should be regarded as a practical solution to various pressing social issues in our communities,” he stated.

Referencing biblical scripture, Mr. Ravunawa underscored the significance of valuing life, quoting Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” He also referenced Galatians 6:2, which encourages individuals to support each other through hardships.

“Both verses highlight the necessity of preserving life and showing compassion to those dealing with life’s pressures,” he commented. He concluded by urging all Fijians to foster environments where individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts can find hope, comfort, and, most importantly, assistance.

“We can be confident that our commitment to these initiatives will lead to success,” he added. September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month.
