Faith-based organizations are vital in tackling suicide and mental health challenges in Fiji, emphasized Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa while addressing Parliament. He highlighted the necessity of engaging religious groups in national efforts to fight the increasing rates of suicide.
Mr. Ravunawa commented on the Ministry of Health’s forthcoming Suicide Prevention 2024 initiative, which is set to launch next Tuesday. He praised the initiative’s theme, “Change the Narrative,” describing it as not only appropriate but essential in the shared battle against suicide.
According to Mr. Ravunawa, faith-based organizations in Fiji have extensive outreach within local communities. He underscored the need for government support for these institutions, asserting that they should receive adequate resources and assistance for capacity building.
“They should not merely serve as a rubber stamp in consultations but should be regarded as crucial allies in addressing various pressing social issues,” he stated. He referred to scripture to emphasize the sanctity of life, quoting Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live,” and Galatians 6:2, which encourages people to “bear one another’s burdens.”
Mr. Ravunawa noted that these scriptures highlight the importance of preserving life and offering compassion to those facing life’s challenges. He concluded by urging all Fijians to foster environments where individuals grappling with suicidal thoughts can discover hope, comfort, and crucial support.
He expressed confidence that the commitment to these initiatives will lead to positive outcomes. September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month.
