Faith-based organizations are crucial in tackling suicide and mental health challenges in Fiji, said Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa during a recent address to Parliament. He emphasized the need to include religious groups in national efforts to address the increasing rates of suicide in the country.
Mr. Ravunawa noted that these organizations can play a significant role in fostering a compassionate environment for those in distress, linking this to the Ministry of Health’s upcoming Suicide Prevention 2024 initiative, set to be launched next Tuesday. He commended the initiative’s theme, “Change the Narrative,” deeming it not only suitable but vital in the collective battle against suicide.
He highlighted that faith-based organizations have extensive outreach within local communities and called for greater government support to enhance their resources and capabilities. “They need to be better looked after by the government in terms of resources and capacity building,” he stated, arguing that these organizations should be recognized as essential partners in tackling various social issues rather than merely serving as consultative rubber stamps.
Referencing scripture, Mr. Ravunawa underscored the importance of valuing life, quoting Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” He also referred to Galatians 6:2, which encourages individuals to “bear one another’s burdens.” According to him, these verses highlight the need to preserve life and offer empathy to those facing life’s pressures.
In conclusion, he urged all Fijians to create supportive environments where individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts can find hope, comfort, and assistance. “We can be rest assured that our commitment to these initiatives will be a success,” he proclaimed. September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month in Fiji.
