Faith-based organizations are crucial in tackling suicide and mental health challenges in Fiji, as highlighted by Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa during a recent parliamentary session. He emphasized the necessity of engaging religious groups in the country’s strategies to mitigate the increasing suicide rates.
Ravunawa discussed the upcoming Suicide Prevention 2024 initiative from the Ministry of Health, set to launch next Tuesday. He commended the initiative’s theme, “Change the Narrative,” describing it as not only fitting but pivotal in the collective effort against suicide.
“The faith-based organizations in Fiji have the largest outreach in our communities,” he noted. He pointed out that government support is essential for these organizations, advocating for better provision of resources and capacity building.
He expressed that these groups should not merely participate in consultations but should be regarded as essential contributors in addressing various pressing social issues.
Referencing biblical scripture, Ravunawa underscored the sanctity of life, quoting Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live,” along with Galatians 6:2, which encourages individuals to “bear one another’s burdens.” He emphasized that these passages highlight the importance of preserving life and offering compassionate support to those facing life’s challenges.
In conclusion, he urged all Fijians to foster environments where those struggling with suicidal thoughts can find hope, comfort, and crucial assistance. “We can be confident that our dedication to these initiatives will lead to success,” he stated. September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month.
