Faith-Based Solutions: Tackling Fiji’s Suicide Crisis

Faith-based organizations are vital in tackling suicide and mental health challenges in Fiji, according to Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa. Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Ravunawa emphasized the necessity of engaging religious groups in efforts to mitigate the alarming rise in suicide rates. He believes these organizations can foster a caring approach for individuals in distress, particularly in relation to the Ministry of Health’s upcoming Suicide Prevention 2024 initiative, set to be launched next Tuesday.

Mr. Ravunawa commended the initiative’s theme, “Change the Narrative,” stating that it is not only appropriate but also essential in the collective battle against suicide. He noted that faith-based organizations possess the widest reach within local communities.

Highlighting the role of religious institutions, he underscored the need for government support, stating, “They need to be better looked after by the government in terms of resources and capacity building.” He urged that these organizations should not merely serve as a rubber stamp in consultations but should be recognized as valuable assets in addressing various social issues in the community.

Referencing scripture, Mr. Ravunawa expressed the significance of valuing life, quoting Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live,” and Galatians 6:2, which encourages individuals to “bear one another’s burdens.” He noted that both passages highlight the importance of life preservation and the need to listen compassionately to those facing life’s pressures.

In conclusion, he urged all Fijians to “create spaces in which those struggling with suicidal thoughts can find hope, solace, and most importantly, help.” He expressed confidence that the commitment to these initiatives would lead to success. September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month.
