Faith-Based Push: Can Fiji Combat Suicide Rates?

Faith-based organizations are crucial in tackling suicide and mental health challenges in Fiji, according to Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa. Speaking in Parliament, Mr. Ravunawa highlighted the need for religious groups to actively participate in the nation’s strategies to address the escalating suicide rates.

He emphasized that these organizations can significantly contribute to fostering a compassionate environment for individuals in distress, in light of the Ministry of Health’s upcoming initiative, Suicide Prevention 2024, set to be launched next Tuesday.

Mr. Ravunawa commended the initiative’s theme, “Change the Narrative,” describing it as highly relevant and vital in the collective struggle against suicide. He noted that faith-based organizations have the broadest reach within local communities.

Pointing to the essential role of these institutions, Mr. Ravunawa underscored the necessity for increased governmental support, particularly in terms of resources and capacity building. He argued that these organizations should not merely serve as formal participants in discussions but be recognized as effective agents in addressing various local social issues.

Referencing religious texts, he emphasized the significance of valuing life, quoting Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live,” and Galatians 6:2, which encourages people to “bear one another’s burdens.” According to Mr. Ravunawa, these scriptures highlight the importance of preserving life and offering support to those facing life’s pressures.

In conclusion, he urged all Fijians to foster environments where individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts can find hope, comfort, and assistance. “We can be confident that our dedication to these initiatives will yield success,” he stated. September is observed as National Suicide Prevention Month.
