Faith-based organizations are crucial in tackling suicide and mental health challenges in Fiji, as highlighted by Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa. Speaking in Parliament, he emphasized the need to include religious institutions in the nation’s efforts to reduce the increasing suicide rates.
Mr. Ravunawa noted that these organizations can significantly contribute to fostering a compassionate approach for individuals in distress, while discussing the upcoming initiative from the Ministry of Health, Suicide Prevention 2024, set to launch next Tuesday. He expressed appreciation for the initiative’s theme, “Change the Narrative,” describing it as not only fitting but vital in the collective battle against suicide.
He pointed out that faith-based organizations have the most extensive reach within local communities. He underlined the necessity for greater government support in terms of resources and capacity building for these organizations. “They should not serve merely as a rubber stamp in discussions but be recognized as essential players in addressing various social challenges in our communities,” he said.
Referencing scripture, Mr. Ravunawa emphasized the sanctity of life with a quote from Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” He also highlighted Galatians 6:2, which encourages people to “bear one another’s burdens.”
“These passages underscore the importance of valuing life and offering an empathetic ear to those facing life’s challenges,” he stated. In closing, he urged all Fijians to foster environments where individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts can find hope, comfort, and help. “We can be confident that our dedication to these initiatives will lead to success,” he added.
September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month.
