Faith and Hope Unite: Battling Suicide in Fiji

Faith-based organizations are crucial in addressing mental health and suicide issues in Fiji, according to Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa. While speaking in Parliament, Mr. Ravunawa underscored the necessity of engaging religious groups in the nation’s efforts to tackle increasing suicide rates.

He commented on the potential of these organizations to foster a compassionate environment for individuals in distress while discussing the Ministry of Health’s Suicide Prevention 2024 initiative, which is set to launch next Tuesday. Mr. Ravunawa expressed his support for the initiative’s theme, “Change the Narrative,” deeming it both relevant and vital in the collective struggle against suicide.

Mr. Ravunawa noted that faith-based organizations are the most prominent in local communities and highlighted the significant role of religious institutions in this context. He called for greater government support for these organizations in terms of resources and the development of their capabilities.

“Their role should not merely be as a rubber stamp in consultations but as a practical asset in addressing various pressing social challenges,” he remarked. He referenced scripture to emphasize the value of life, quoting Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live,” and Galatians 6:2, which encourages individuals to “bear one another’s burdens.”

He reiterated the importance of these scriptures in recognizing the need to preserve life and show empathy toward those facing life’s pressures. In his closing remarks, Mr. Ravunawa urged all Fijians to foster environments where individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts can discover hope, comfort, and essential support.

He expressed confidence in the success of the initiatives, noting that September is designated as National Suicide Prevention Month.
