Opposition MP Penioni Ravunawa has highlighted the crucial role that faith-based organizations play in tackling suicide and mental health issues in Fiji. During his address to Parliament, Ravunawa emphasized the need for cooperation with religious bodies to address the increasing rates of suicide in the nation.

He discussed the upcoming Suicide Prevention 2024 initiative from the Ministry of Health, which is set to launch next Tuesday, and underscored the theme “Change the Narrative” as vital in the collective battle against suicide.

“The faith-based organizations in Fiji have the most extensive reach in our local communities,” he stated. He also pointed out the necessity for enhanced government support for these religious institutions in terms of resources and capacity building.

Ravunawa argued that these organizations should not merely serve as tokens in consultations but should be regarded as practical instruments for addressing various challenging social issues. He referenced scripture, emphasizing the significance of life, quoting Deuteronomy 30:19: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live,” alongside Galatians 6:2, which encourages individuals to “bear one another’s burdens.”

He concluded his remarks by urging all Fijians to create environments where those struggling with suicidal thoughts can find hope, comfort, and essential help. “We can be assured that our commitment to these initiatives will be successful,” he added. September is recognized as National Suicide Prevention Month.
