The Chinese Embassy recently hosted a welcoming reception for the Guandong Delegation and the Bright Journey Medical team in Fiji, who have been in the country for two days to provide cataract surgeries at the CWM Eye Clinic.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, emphasized the significance of the partnership between Guandong, China, and Fiji, noting that it has fostered progress in infrastructure, healthcare, and education. Since establishing a sister-city relationship with Suva in 2011, Guandong and Fiji have collaborated successfully across various sectors, with notable projects such as the renovation of the Suva Civic Center and improvements at Marist Brothers High School.
The ambassador highlighted that cataract disease has considerably affected many Fijians’ livelihoods, and the efforts of the Bright Medical Team have been crucial in alleviating this issue. Since 2013, the team has provided free eye surgeries for cataract patients across Fiji and other Pacific nations, positively impacting over 200 individuals, earning them the nickname “Angel of Light.”
Dr. Hung Wenyong, a specialist in cataract surgery from the Bright Medical Team, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to treat 50 patients in Fiji, 47 of whom suffered from cataracts. He noted that while their primary goal was to perform surgeries, they also valued the chance to strengthen ties between Fiji and China.
The relations between China and Fiji have been constructive over the years, paving the way for significant advancements in Fiji’s economy.
This collaboration not only underlines the humanitarian efforts made by international teams but also highlights the ongoing relationship that fosters development and healthcare improvements in Fijian society. It is an uplifting example of how international partnerships can lead to tangible benefits for communities in need.
In summary, a recent medical mission brought critical eye care to Fiji while strengthening ties between the nation and China, showcasing how collaborative efforts can lead to both health and economic advancements.
