Police have initiated a comprehensive nationwide operation aimed at dismantling a suspected explosive smuggling operation. This initiative, referred to as Operation Expo, involves targeted raids on homes, roadblocks, and collaboration with various authorities.

In a recent article, it was highlighted that the police conducted raids on three residences in Lami. Roadblocks were established in areas such as Sawani, Suva, and Lami, with plans for additional checkpoints across the country. Police Commissioner Isikia Savua stated that all suspects’ homes would be searched in the pursuit of evidence and to ensure public safety.

Charles Barclay, the general manager of Emperor Gold Mine, which is now known as Vatukoula Gold Mine, reported that several miners had been dismissed in the last few months for stealing electrical generators. In response to these incidents, increased security measures have been implemented to safeguard against the theft of explosives, and a reward system has been introduced for individuals who provide credible tips about the smuggling of explosives.

The previous year, there had already been incidents involving mine workers who were terminated and charged with theft for smuggling explosives. Divisional Police Commissioner Eastern Indar Prasad emphasized that all suspicious homes and vehicles would be searched. Meanwhile, the police continue working with the Department of Mineral Resources to investigate the origins of certain explosives discovered in a recent raid.

The police have encouraged community involvement in enhancing the success of Operation Expo. Commissioner Savua urged the public to call the Crime Stoppers line with any information regarding locations where explosives might be stored.

This operation highlights the commitment of law enforcement to tackle illegal activities head-on, ensuring a safer environment for all citizens. Through the joint efforts of the police and the community, there is hope that these illegal operations can be curbed effectively.

Overall, the proactive approach being taken to deal with the issue of illegal explosives reflects a determination to maintain law and order while engaging the public in these efforts.
