Police have launched a nationwide operation aimed at dismantling a suspected explosives smuggling ring. This initiative, dubbed Operation Expo, involved raids on three homes in Lami, Fiji, as reported in a 1997 article from The Fiji Times.

In support of the operation, police established roadblocks in Sawani, Suva, and Lami, with plans to implement additional checkpoints across the nation. Police Commissioner Isikia Savua confirmed that law enforcement was conducting thorough searches, including those of any suspects’ residences.

Charles Barclay, the general manager of Emperor Gold Mine, expressed concern over the recent dismissal of several miners connected to the smuggling of electrical generators from the mine, now known as Vatukoula Gold Mine. To enhance security and prevent further thefts, new measures have been put in place, including a reward system that encourages public assistance in reporting any illicit activities involving explosives.

Barclay emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “Anyone providing us with reliable information will be rewarded once the information leads to successful outcomes.” He highlighted the recent case in which four mine workers were dismissed and faced larceny charges for smuggling explosives.

Divisional Police Commissioner for the Eastern Division, Indar Prasad, noted that all suspicious houses and vehicles would be thoroughly searched. As the investigation progresses, police are collaborating with the Department of Mineral Resources to ascertain the origin of explosives discovered in a recent raid in Toorak.

Mr. Savua also mentioned the potential need for tighter customs regulations should it be confirmed that the discovered explosives were not sourced from the Vatukoula mine. The Criminal Investigation Department has acted on a tip-off regarding the storage of explosives in Lami, although initial raids returned empty-handed.

Citizens are urged to assist in this effort by reporting any suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers. Mr. Savua remarked on the critical role of public cooperation in ensuring the success of Operation Expo.

This nationwide crackdown reflects the relentless efforts of law enforcement to enhance public safety and clamp down on illegal activities. Engaging the community in this fight against crime could foster a safer environment for all.

In summary, this article highlights Canada’s proactive measures to combat the illegal explosives trade through cooperative public engagement, police action, and strategic partnerships with organizations like the Department of Mineral Resources and Customs officials. As the operation unfolds, there remains hope for improved safety and security within the community.
