Police have initiated a nationwide operation targeting what is suspected to be an illegal explosives syndicate. The crackdown, named Operation Expo, commenced with coordinated raids on three residences in Lami. These actions are part of broader enforcement measures that include the establishment of roadblocks in key areas like Sawani, Suva, and Lami, with plans for further security checkpoints across the country.

Police Commissioner Isikia Savua announced that authorities would conduct thorough searches at the homes of all identified suspects. This comes in light of recent events at Emperor Gold Mine, where a number of workers were terminated for smuggling electrical generators out of the facility. General Manager Charles Barclay indicated that after the theft of detonators, rigorous security protocols have been implemented to prevent any further incidents.

To foster community cooperation, a reward system has been introduced, incentivizing citizens to report any wrongdoing related to explosives smuggling. Barclay assured that informants would receive compensation once the information provided is verified as accurate.

The previous year witnessed the dismissal of four mine workers charged with larceny for similar offenses. Divisional Police Commissioner Eastern Indar Prasad affirmed that all suspicious vehicles and residences would be subjected to searches. Meanwhile, discussions are underway with the Department of Mineral Resources to ascertain the origins of explosives discovered in a recent raid.

Savua highlighted the importance of community involvement, urging members of the public to contact the Crime Stoppers police line with any tips regarding potential explosives storage locations. Despite some raids yielding no discoveries, law enforcement officials remain committed to ensuring public safety and preventing illegal activities.

In a hopeful note, this operation not only aims to dismantle potentially dangerous illegal activities but also fosters a stronger partnership between law enforcement and the community. By encouraging public participation, it is likely to enhance safety and uphold the rule of law, ensuring that the region remains secure.

This collective effort reflects a commitment to tackling serious crimes proactively, showcasing the vital role of community vigilance in maintaining public safety.
