Exclusive: Enhancing Counter Narcotics Operations

The government is in the process of drafting new laws that will enable the National Counter Narcotics Bureau to collaborate effectively with the police. During an appearance on The Lens@177 this week, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua explained that currently, bureau members work alongside the police. However, he emphasized the need to establish this collaboration formally, leading to the rapid development of new legislation.

Mr. Tikoduadua noted that the process is not about reinventing the wheel but learning from other jurisdictions to make the system functional. He pointed out that although the work of the bureau is under the umbrella of police operations, due to it being a new government department, specific laws need to be created to ensure its effectiveness.

He acknowledged that some aspects of the bureau’s work are sensitive and not open for public discussion, as a significant portion involves information gathering. Presently, they utilize the existing police powers to carry out these tasks.

Mr. Tikoduadua also mentioned that his ministry, along with the Office of the Solicitor General, is collaborating with experts to develop a set of laws that will empower the counter narcotics bureau to work efficiently while maintaining accountability.
