The RC Manubhai Nataleira Sevens tournament is set to take place from December 12 to 14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, and it will feature exciting new regulations aimed at enhancing the experience for participating teams. Tournament director Solo Finau announced the introduction of a bonus points system designed to benefit all competitors.
The tournament aims to attract 80 teams across four competitive tiers: Tier One for champion teams, Tier Two for regular teams, Tier Three for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four for Under-19 competitors. Finau emphasized that these changes were implemented to rekindle interest in sevens tournaments throughout the country, focusing on both financial benefits for the teams and the growth of players.
Finau remarked on the importance of equipping local players with skills for high-pressure scenarios in matches, citing that World Cups have been decided by drop goals, and had encouraged teams to leverage their natural abilities in gameplay.
In addition to the bonus points, the tournament will offer immediate rewards. Players who score individual tries from within their own in-goal area will receive a $100 reward right after the match. Team captains will also be rewarded for team tries. Additional cash prizes will be given for categories such as the most converted team tries, drop goals, and penalties throughout the tournament. Teams achieving the fastest recorded tries are also in line for a $100 reward.
The Fiji Rugby Union has sanctioned this tournament, which will be formally launched on December 6.
This tournament promises to be an exciting opportunity for local rugby teams to showcase their talents while also being rewarded for their skills. The innovative approach taken by the tournament organizers highlights a commitment to both the growth of the sport and the encouragement of competitive spirit among players.
Overall, this event could significantly contribute to the revival and popularity of rugby sevens in the region, presenting a fantastic platform for emerging talent.
