Aisea Tabakau Maiteci, a former officer with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for corruption-related offenses by the Ba Magistrates Court. This ruling comes after Maiteci was convicted on seven counts of Obtaining Financial Advantage, as charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

The charges were linked to actions taken by Maiteci between January 1 and December 31, 2019, during which he issued fraudulent Republic of Fiji Driver Licenses to individuals, despite not being entitled to any financial gain for doing so. On September 3, 2024, he pled guilty to all charges, acknowledging the nature of his offenses during court proceedings.

Resident Magistrate Salote Nasedra, in delivering the sentence, emphasized the betrayal of public trust associated with Maiteci’s role as an LTA officer, particularly noting the misuse of his IT qualifications for unethical purposes. The court also observed that his offer to return $1,600 at the time of sentencing seemed more like a strategy to avoid imprisonment rather than a genuine act of restitution.

Consequently, Maiteci will serve one year of his sentence immediately, with the remaining eight months suspended for a period of five years while under probation. He has been granted a 28-day window to appeal the court’s decision.
