A former police officer has been sentenced to four years and 11 months in prison after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of an intoxicated man. Fifita Toma Tawake, 28, was sentenced by Justice Thushara Rajasinghe at the Suva High Court on Friday. The incident occurred on January 13, when Tawake, reportedly under the influence, punched a man who had touched their car as they ran a red light at Central Street, Suva.
The court noted Tawake’s blatant disregard for the victim, who was left unconscious on the pavement. Justice Rajasinghe criticized Tawake for dragging the man’s body to a nearby location and abandoning him there in the rain. During the proceedings, it was acknowledged that Tawake was a first-time offender, expressed remorse for his actions, and entered a guilty plea on the first day of his trial. Consequently, Tawake will serve a sentence that includes a non-parole period of two years and 11 months.
This tragic incident highlights the severe consequences of impulsive actions fueled by intoxication. While the outcome is somber, the recognition of remorse and the legal system’s response serve to emphasize the importance of accountability and reflection on one’s actions. It’s a reminder of the responsibility individuals have, especially those in positions of authority, to uphold public safety and respect for all individuals.
