The Fijian government is planning to meet with the Fiji Muslim League (FML) to address the eviction of approximately 1,000 residents from the Nabua squatter settlement. Local Government and Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa has confirmed that discussions will focus on providing tenants with additional time for relocation, rather than proceeding with immediate evictions.

During the upcoming meeting, scheduled for either later yesterday or today, Nalumisa intends to communicate the government’s commitment to support the affected families and facilitate their transition to alternative housing. This effort comes as the Ministry of Housing collaborates with the Ministry of Lands to identify suitable land for these residents.

FML lawyer Shelvin Singh mentioned that there have been numerous discussions between the League and the squatters, often in the presence of various government officials. He noted that past engagements involved efforts to find appropriate lands for relocation and highlighted concerns regarding some squatters allegedly renting out properties while not residing there.

Singh conveyed that FML has encouraged residents to begin the relocation process, acknowledging that the land has been allocated for development following secured funding by the League.

Moreover, Lands Minister Filimoni Vosarogo expressed his ministry’s willingness to assist in locating available land for the displaced residents.

This proactive approach by the government and the FML could ultimately lead to a more compassionate resolution for the residents affected by the eviction. By collaborating and emphasizing timely relocation, there is potential for a smoother transition for those involved, allowing them to secure better housing options and contributing to future community development.

In summary, the government’s engagement with the Fiji Muslim League highlights a cooperative effort aimed at providing assistance and solutions for families facing eviction, fostering hope for a positive outcome amidst challenging circumstances.
