The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) is set to enforce court orders for the eviction of eight tenants who have accumulated significant rental arrears as part of a broader strategy to recover overdue rents. This initiative aims to address long-standing financial obligations owed by tenants across various regions, with five tenants located in the North-Western Region, one in the South-Western Region, and two in the Central-Eastern Region.
In an official statement, TLTB confirmed its commitment to maintaining fair administration of land leases while also prioritizing the rights of landowners. They will work closely with Court Sheriffs and local police to execute the eviction orders, including dismantling structures when deemed necessary. Furthermore, TLTB plans to publicly disclose the names of tenants with substantial arrears who have failed to either settle their debts or engage in discussions regarding payment arrangements.
This enforcement action is not an isolated issue but forms part of TLTB’s intensified efforts in recovering unpaid rents. As noted in previous reports, the board has been facing substantial arrears, amounting to approximately $28.1 million from around 25,444 tenants who are now in breach of their lease agreements. Following prior final warnings to over 14,600 tenants, TLTB is actively urging all tenants with outstanding debts to take immediate action before facing more serious consequences.
While the situation presents challenges, TLTB remains hopeful that transparent communication and collaboration with tenants can foster solutions beneficial to both parties. The board emphasizes that resolving these financial obligations can help ensure the financial stability of landowners who rely on lease payments for their livelihood.
As TLTB moves forward with their enforcement strategy, they encourage tenants to reach out for support or assistance with payment plans, aiming to balance accountability with a strong commitment to community welfare. This proactive approach highlights the need for cooperation among tenants and the TLTB to create lasting stability for both tenants and landowners.
