The National Disaster Management Office has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to assist residents affected by flooding in Vatuwaqa and Wailoku, Suva. According to NDMO, families have relocated to St. Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.

Residents living in flood-prone and low-lying areas of the Central Division are being advised to take precautions, as heavy rains overnight have led to rising river levels and flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre has been partially activated, and the NDMO is collaborating with relevant authorities to assess the ongoing situation.

The intense rainfall has resulted in flooding in various towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges. NDMO reports that certain areas are experiencing landslides and traffic disruptions, urging the public to avoid unnecessary travel in these regions.

“Public safety is our primary concern at this time. If individuals require assistance in reaching higher ground, they should reach out to the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority,” NDMO stated.

Additionally, NDMO urges individuals to stay away from and not attempt to cross or swim in flooded rivers, streams, drains, or roads where water levels exceed knee height. This advice is critical for ensuring personal safety and reducing life-threatening risks for both the public and first responders.

The floodwaters may contain contaminants, so the public is advised to avoid contact with them when possible. Furthermore, individuals should be cautious of potential health risks such as leptospirosis, typhoid, Dengue fever, and diarrhea following heavy rains.
