The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to assist residents from Vatuwaqa and Wailoku in Suva who have been affected by recent flooding. According to NDMO, displaced families are currently seeking shelter at St Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.
Residents in areas prone to flooding and low-lying regions within the Central Division are being urged to take caution due to heavy rainfall that has resulted in increased river levels and flooding. In response to the situation, the National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has been partially activated, and NDMO is collaborating with relevant authorities to keep track of the ongoing developments.
The intense rainfall has caused flooding in several towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges. NDMO has noted the occurrence of landslides and traffic disruptions, advising the public in affected areas to avoid unnecessary travel.
The NDMO emphasizes that public safety is their top priority at this time. They encourage individuals needing assistance to relocate to higher ground to reach out to the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority.
Additionally, the public is advised to stay away from flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and pathways where water levels exceed knee height, as this is vital for ensuring personal safety and reducing life-threatening risks for both the public and emergency responders. Floodwaters may be contaminated, and individuals are cautioned against contact, while being aware of the potential health risks of leptospirosis, typhoid, dengue fever, and diarrhea following heavy rains.
