The National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) has set up three evacuation centers in the Central Division to assist residents from Vatuwaqa and Wailoku in Suva who have been affected by flooding. According to NDMO, impacted families are currently sheltered at St. Marcellin Primary School, Marist Champagnat Institute, and Marata Hall in Wailoku.

The NDMO is warning residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas to take precautions as heavy rainfall overnight has resulted in rising river levels and flooding. The National Emergency Operation Centre (NEOC) has been partially activated, and NDMO is collaborating with various authorities to assess the ongoing situation.

The intense rainfall has caused flooding in several towns and communities, impacting minor roads and bridges. NDMO reports that some regions are facing landslides and traffic disruptions, and they advise the public in these areas to avoid any unnecessary travel.

“Public safety is our top priority at this time. If individuals need help relocating to higher ground, they are encouraged to reach out to the Fiji Police Force or the National Fire Authority,” NDMO stated.

NDMO is also urging people to stay clear of flooded rivers, streams, drains, roads, and walkways where water levels exceed knee height. This directive is essential for ensuring personal safety and reducing the risk of life-threatening situations for both the public and first responders.

Floodwaters may be contaminated, and the public is advised to limit contact with floodwater when possible. Additionally, there is an increased risk of leptospirosis, typhoid, Dengue Fever, and diarrhea following heavy rainfall.
