Spanish police have achieved a significant milestone by seizing 13 metric tonnes of cocaine, discovered concealed within a shipment of bananas arriving from Ecuador at the southern port of Algeciras on November 7. This operation stands as the second largest cocaine seizure in Europe and ranks among the largest globally.
The Spanish Policía Nacional reported that several of the cocaine packages were branded with the label “Fiji.” Although the final destination of the drugs has not yet been confirmed, officials from Spain’s Central Narcotics Brigade indicated that it was evident the cocaine was not solely intended for the Spanish market.
An alert was prompted by a warning from Ecuadorian authorities, who informed the Spanish police about a suspicious cargo due for arrival. In connection with this seizure, a woman associated with the receiving company has been arrested, while two managers from the same firm are reportedly on the run.
Minister for Home Affairs, Pio Tikoduadua, expressed relief that the cocaine was intercepted before reaching its intended destinations, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in combating drug trafficking. He noted that, although completely eradicating the drug trade may be unfeasible, effective management through partnerships can help maintain safety.
