Adran Kumar is thankful for his mother’s encouragement to participate in the 2024 New Zealand-Fiji Secondary School Essay Competition. The Year 12 student from Sabeto College in Nadi emerged as the supreme winner of the 16th edition of the contest.

At just 17 years old, Kumar was among two students from the Western Division recognized for crafting the best essay. He revealed that he initially struggled with doubt during the writing process, even considering giving up and feeling discouraged by the talent of other students across the country.

“Halfway through writing my essay, I gave up and told my parents that I couldn’t do it,” he shared. “I thought it would be pointless to put in my best effort if it wouldn’t lead to success. My mother encouraged me not to give up. She kept motivating me to continue and finish it. I am grateful I listened to her.”

Over 100 secondary schools participated in this year’s competition, with a total of 600 essays submitted. The theme focused on the unique perspectives of the Pacific region. Kumar expressed appreciation for the support of his teachers, crediting them for his success.

His essay centered on eco-tourism and the importance of preserving the vanua, stating, “The significance of eco-tourism is that it showcases who we are in the Pacific and the world. It helps preserve Fijian culture, tradition, and our land.”

Kumar intends to pursue a career in medicine. As the winner, he received $500 in cash, a laptop, and a certificate of recognition. Dr. Satendra Singh, one of the judges, praised the high standard of writing in the competition, noting, “A good essay or article not only engages but also resonates with the hearts of its readers.”

Alex Shahryar-Davies, Deputy High Commissioner of the New Zealand High Commission, expressed pride in supporting the essay competition for 16 years. He emphasized the opportunity it provides for students in Fiji to engage their thinking and writing skills, contributing to a platform for shared ideas that benefit both New Zealand and Fiji.

Certificates of recognition were awarded to Shresti Devi (Year 11), Kristina Kavita (Year 13), Shakshi Chand (Year 13), and Nitish Chand (Year 13).
