Emily Esposito, the captain of the Nasinu women’s soccer team, shone brightly in the recent Digicel Fiji Women’s Senior League game, leading her squad to a narrow 1-0 victory against Lami with a decisive penalty kick at the Pacific Theological College in Suva.
The match proved to be fiercely competitive, with both teams showcasing strong performances. Although Nasinu faced some challenges and made a few errors early on, it was Esposito’s late-game intervention that clinched the win for her team.
Head coach Jalindar Singh commended his players for their resilience and determination when faced with a formidable opponent like Lami. He pointed out that the Nasinu squad is relatively young, composed of under-16 and U19 players, and emphasized their ongoing development and growth as a team.
“It was a great match; the girls put forth their best effort on the field,” said Singh. “While we started slowly and made some mistakes, we are fortunate to have scored that last-minute goal to secure the victory.”
Addressing the strengths of both teams, Singh acknowledged Lami’s strong defense, which successfully prevented both sides from scoring in the early stages of the match. He expressed enthusiasm about the team’s potential, noting their ambition to advance to the premier league while continuing to improve and tackle any weaknesses in future games.
Singh thanked the players for their dedication and commitment, and he also appreciated the unwavering support from parents, which plays a significant role in the team’s journey.
This victory not only marks a significant achievement for the Nasinu team but also highlights the promise of their talented young players, offering hope for a bright future in women’s soccer in Fiji.
