Escalating Child Sex Crimes: A Society in Crisis

Child sex crimes are on the rise in communities, with numbers described as “horrendous.” This perspective was shared by Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, the chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC), who highlighted several factors that contribute to this disturbing trend.

Ratu Viliame pointed to overcrowding, inadequate housing policies, lack of education, and easy access to pornography as key elements fueling sexual abuse and violence. He emphasized that while communication technology has advanced, making it simpler for individuals to connect, it has simultaneously increased access to problematic content such as pornography.

He expressed concern over the alarming age of perpetrators, noting instances where children as young as six or seven commit acts of sexual violence against infants. Ratu Viliame underscored the importance of not disregarding the responsibility that comes with individual freedom, insisting that society must address these issues comprehensively to prevent further deterioration.

“This is destroying our society,” he warned.
