Eradicating the ‘Parasite’: A Call to Protect Women and Girls

Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner Barbara Malimali has called for the eradication of violence against women and girls, likening it to the fight against corruption. Ms. Malimali described this type of violence as a significant blight on society, emphasizing that it functions like a parasite that diminishes the well-being of the community.

She urged men and boys to acknowledge their roles as protectors of the women and children in their lives, stating, “You are meant to protect your sisters, mothers, grandmothers, and cousins. You’re not supposed to be hitting, abusing, or assaulting them. You’re meant to care for them.”

Moreover, Ms. Malimali highlighted the need for a fundamental shift in mindset towards women and girls, advocating for viewing them from a perspective of protection rather than ownership. She expressed concern over the substantial economic toll of violence against women and girls, estimating it to be close to reaching the billion-dollar mark, a stark increase since similar figures were evaluated two decades ago.

Ms. Malimali reiterated the essential idea that women and children are not property but rather individuals worthy of protection and care, saying, “They are there for us to safeguard their blessings from the Almighty.”

This call to action reflects an urgent need for cultural change and collective responsibility in tackling violence against women and girls. With initiatives focused on education and community engagement, there is hope for a future where such violence is not tolerated, fostering an environment where all individuals can live safely and with dignity.

In highlighting these issues, it is important to recognize the potential for positive change within communities when men and women come together to support and uplift each other, paving the way for a more equitable society.
