World MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises) Day was celebrated on June 27th to highlight the vital role MSMEs play in fostering innovation, generating jobs, and promoting sustainability. This year’s theme, “Small Business, Big Change,” prompted discussions within the Building at Sunset community about what inspired individuals to embark on their entrepreneurial journeys.
Fina Bakani Fisher, the owner of Comfy Stays, shared her experience. She manages a short-term rental business with two properties: a two-bedroom unit in Laucala Beach Estate priced at $200 per night and a larger five-bedroom property in Pacific Harbour at $750 per night. Initially motivated by the desire to balance family life and contribute financially, Fina’s focus has shifted towards achieving financial independence. She is eager to expand her business from a Facebook page to a dedicated website.
Sonam Nair, managing director of Total Hygiene Solutions, recounted her start during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Her company was launched in response to the heightened demand for cleaning services as businesses sought to maintain hygiene and safety. With services currently offered in the Suva-Nausori corridor, Sonam is looking to grow her operations further. Her motivation stems from personal aspirations and seeing successful women in business, prompting her to contribute to public health and hygiene.
Veniana Ravesi, founder of Ravesi’s Kinetic Fitness, entered the fitness industry fueled by a lifelong passion for sports and wellness. Her experiences have led her to recognize fitness not only as a means of physical strength but also as a way to build confidence and resilience. With over a decade of expertise and multiple fitness certifications, she established her fitness facility to promote health and well-being within her community.
Kelera Lomaloma Mataika, founder of Atelier 153, shared her commitment to sustainability and innovation in construction. She aims to address local infrastructural challenges by leveraging indigenous knowledge and new manufacturing methods. Her creation of the Innovation in Construction Hub stems from a desire to collaborate across various skills in the construction industry to generate innovative solutions.
These inspiring stories reflect the diverse motivations and impacts of entrepreneurs within the MSME sector, showcasing how small businesses can foster significant societal change.
