Entrepreneurial Sparks: How MSMEs Ignite Change

World MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises) Day was celebrated on June 27th, aimed at highlighting the vital role MSMEs play in fostering innovation, creating jobs, and ensuring sustainability. This year’s theme, “Small Business, Big Change,” prompted members of the Building at Sunset community to reflect on their inspirations for pursuing entrepreneurship.

Fina Bakani Fisher, owner of Comfy Stays, runs a short-term rental business featuring two properties: a two-bedroom unit in Laucala Beach Estate priced at $200 per night, and a five-bedroom, 4.5-bath property in Pacific Harbour available for $750 per night. Initially, her motivation stemmed from the desire to stay home with her children while contributing to the family income. Over time, her focus shifted to achieving financial independence, with plans for growth beyond her current Facebook presence to an upcoming website launch.

Sonam Nair, managing director of Total Hygiene Solutions, initiated her cleaning business during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 after securing contracts from various businesses in need of cleaning services. Operating primarily in the Suva-Nausori corridor, she aims to expand into additional towns. Her business motivation is deeply rooted in personal values, driven by a longstanding interest in entrepreneurship. The pandemic highlighted the critical need for cleaning services, and the success of other women in business also inspired her.

Veniana Ravesi, founder of Ravesi’s Kinetic Fitness, discovered her passion for sports and physical activity during high school, which evolved into a commitment to health and wellness. Through her personal journey, she recognized fitness’s transformative impact on confidence and resilience, fueling her desire to assist others in reaching their fitness aspirations. Drawing from her extensive experience and numerous certifications, she established Ravesi’s Kinetic Fitness to create a welcoming environment for individuals seeking healthier lifestyles.

Kelera Lomaloma Mataika, founder of Atelier 153 and the Innovation in Construction Hub, combines her enthusiasm for sustainability, construction, and innovation. She believes in leveraging local and indigenous knowledge to develop new products that address Fiji’s infrastructural challenges. Her goal is to unite skills within the construction and trade industries to drive innovative projects forward.

This celebration highlighted the diverse stories and motivations behind entrepreneurship, showcasing the significant contributions of MSMEs to the economy and community development.
