Enough is Enough: Speeding Drivers Under Fire!

Opposition Member of Parliament, Ketan Lal, is urging the government to take immediate action against what he describes as ‘reckless speeding’ among truck and bus drivers, as well as operators of heavy vehicles. This call for action follows a series of recent accidents, including a noteworthy incident involving a Goundar Shipping Ltd bus in Lautoka.

Lal emphasized the urgency of addressing the persistent issue of speeding on the nation’s roads, stating that vehicles frequently exceed the national speed limits, thereby posing significant risks to all road users. He expressed that the time for awareness campaigns has passed and that decisive measures are now necessary to ensure public safety.

He suggested that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) should enforce stringent regulations, including the mandatory installation of speed limiters or Speed Lock Systems on all public service vehicles (PSVs) and trucks. Lal proposed a maximum speed limit of 80 km/hr, which he believes would align with national regulations while balancing the need for flexibility.

Lal further explained that while some transport vehicles are confined to speeds of 60 km/hr, implementing a uniform limit of 80 km/hr for Speed Locks could significantly reduce the likelihood of speed-related accidents. He stressed that such precautions are essential for protecting lives and that the recent accidents were preventable.

He concluded with a strong plea for the LTA, the government, and various stakeholders to prioritize road safety and take necessary steps to safeguard citizens before more tragedies occur.

This call for enhanced road safety measures reflects a growing awareness of the dangers associated with speeding, and it presents an opportunity for concerted action that could ultimately lead to safer roads for everyone. By addressing these critical issues proactively, we could see a significant reduction in traffic-related accidents and a stronger commitment to the well-being of motorists and pedestrians alike.
