Energy Fiji Ltd Approves Significant Salary Increase sparking Financial Concerns

Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) has approved a 17 percent salary increase effective from January 1, 2023, for approximately 880 employees, excluding the executive and senior management teams. The company’s 2023 annual report, recently presented in Parliament, indicates that this salary increment contributed to the post-tax loss of $24.8 million recorded for the year.

EFL reported an increase in operational costs amounting to about $10.3 million. This included an $8.8 million provision for employee benefits approved by the EFL board in September 2023, alongside the 17 percent increase in salary and allowances. These measures were aimed at employee retention and maintaining good relations with staff unions. However, this expense was not originally budgeted for in the year’s operational costs.

In 2023, EFL spent $2.9 million on the CEO and executive management group. Additionally, the directors received fees totaling $12,667 in 2023, a rise from $7,917 in 2022.
