The Get Into Rugby (GIR) Plus program has made a significant impact on young women rugby players at Namata District School in Tailevu, highlighted during the recent GIR Plus festival for primary schools held at Bidesi Ground in Laucala Bay, Suva. Team coach Neli Nabogi described how the program promotes life skills and aims to combat violence, encouraging students to express their experiences.
Initially hesitant, the students have gradually started to voice their thoughts as they have progressed in the program. Despite being offered only a week to prepare for the tournament, the Namata team’s participation underscored the program’s focus on holistic development through sports.
Nabogi, who has been instrumental in implementing the GIR Plus program at Namata since 2018, reflected on the challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated sport. Her love for rugby and dedication to teaching the children fueled her passion and perseverance in advancing the program.
This initiative not only strengthens the participants’ rugby skills but also empowers them to address important social issues, fostering a supportive environment where young women can thrive.
Overall, the GIR Plus program exemplifies how sports can facilitate personal growth and community awareness, paving the way for a brighter future for young female athletes.
This article serves as a testament to the power of sports in nurturing both physical and emotional resilience among young women, allowing them to break barriers and build confidence in a traditionally male-dominated field.
