During the Fiji National Girl Guides Centennial Camp 2024 in Labasa, First Lady Madam Vilomena Katonivere addressed concerns over alarming trends such as the use of the social media platform Telegram by students for inappropriate activities. She emphasized the importance of being aware of one’s surroundings and the choices one makes, stating the community’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of the youth.

Under the theme “100 Years of Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders: Honoring Our Past, Inspiring Our Future,” Madam Vilomena called for collaborative efforts among parents, teachers, guardians, and guide leaders to foster a “safe space” for open communication about pressing social issues. She highlighted the need to empower girls to make informed decisions and actively participate in preventing violence against children.

In her role as patron of the Fiji Girl Guides, she acknowledged the dedication of past leaders who have contributed to the organization, remembering those who have recently passed away and honoring their legacies. She recognized notable figures within the guiding community for their ongoing mentorship and support.

Mrs. Sese Matarugu, the Divisional Northern Officer of the Girl Guides Association, reported that 789 participants from various divisions, including Yasawa and Moala in Lau, are attending the three-day centenary camp. She expressed hope that the activities planned would be beneficial, focusing on enhancing the girls’ skills for everyday life.
